Promised Land

I left home when I was half grown
couldn’t get along with my dad
there was never enough to buy me school girl stuff
my body was all that I had

a friend of mine gave me a line
saying living in the city was cool
we could make us a buck with my looks and her luck
I would never have to be no one’s fool

I’ll be nice to the guy with the wandering eye
with two C notes in his hand
if I play my cards right by the end of the night
I’ll be closer to the promised land

rent’s been paid I had to get myself laid
but I’m not on the street tonight
but if the johns slow down
you can bet I’ll be found
on the corner standing under the light

I do some cocaine, I try to dull the pain
the faces of the man above me
someday I’ll have a life I want to be someone’s wife
have a home and someone who loves me

I’ll be nice to the guy with the wandering eye
the two C notes in his hand
if I play my cards right by the end of the night
I’ll be closer to the promised land

when I first began luring a man
was a scent on a summer’s breeze
a backwards glance, a movement, a stance
were all that I needed to please

I’ll be nice to the guy in the suit and tie
with the two hundred dollars in his hand
and if I play my cards right by the end of the night
I’ll be closer to the promised land

I left home when I was half grown
couldn’t get along with my dad
there was never enough to buy me school girl stuff
my body was all that I had
